| Sales: pickups and amplification - LR Baggs pickups and preamps |
|
As noted elsewhere on this website, I'm a particular fan of LR Baggs acoustic guitar pickups and preamps. Lloyd Baggs has come a long way since he began making pickups for Ry Cooder, Leo Kottke and James Taylor, and his company now produces a wide range of world-class pickups.
I keep most of the more popular models in stock, and the complete range is available to special order. I am also happy to fit your pickups if you prefer to acquire them directly. Please feel free to contact me if you're looking for something special! |

| LR Baggs I-Beam Active pickup
This is the best LR Baggs amplification system for steel-string acoustic guitars, if you want the most authentic acoustic sound. The I-Beam Active System combines a bridge plate transducer with an endpin preamp that enables you to simply "plug-in-and-play". The I-Beam is easily installed, without the need to modify the bridge, saddle or setup of your guitar. It reproduces the natural tone of an acoustic guitar while maintaining perfect string balance and providing full dynamic range. The I-Beam itself is the heart of the system and weighs only 1/3rd oz. This revolutionary bridge plate transducer easily sticks to the bridge plate on the inside of the guitar and does not affect the acoustic tone of the guitar in any way. It's microphonic enough to reproduce accurately the sound of your playing, but is resistant to feedback and gives you excellent amplified sound without that 'fingernails on the blackboard' sound that under-saddle pickups have. A placement jig is included that allows you to install the pickup in minutes and get the ideal placement for the transducer inside the guitar. The ultra-low noise I-Beam preamp is built into the strapjack, which is installed in place of the endpin. A soundhole volume control is also provided. A neat velcro battery pocket is provided for the battery. 9v battery required.

LR Baggs I-Beam Passive pickup
This is the best LR Baggs amplification system for steel-string acoustic guitars, if you want the most authentic acoustic sound. The I-Beam Passive System bridge plate transducer enables you to simply "plug-in-and-play". The I-Beam is easily installed, without the need to modify the bridge, saddle or setup of your guitar. It reproduces the natural tone of an acoustic guitar while maintaining perfect string balance and providing full dynamic range. The I-Beam bridge plate transducer weighs only 1/3rd oz. and does not affect the acoustic sound of the instrument. It's microphonic enough to reproduce accurately the sound of your playing, but is resistant to feedback and gives you excellent amplified sound without that 'fingernails on the blackboard sound that under-saddle pickups have. A placement jig is included that allows you to install the pickup in minutes and get the ideal placement for the transducer inside the guitar. A high quality Switchcraft endpin jack is provided. The I-Beam Passive is simpler to install than its Active cousin - less wires and no battery compartment - but it does require an external preamp, such as the Baggs Para Acoustic DI or the Gigpro Universal preamp.

LR Baggs M1A active soundhole pickup
The M1 Active takes the M1 pickup to a new level of performance and convenience. The built-in all class A electronics eliminate the need for any external preamps and makes the M1 Active compatible with any outboard equipment. And the volume control gives you fingertip access in any performing situation. Output can be up to three times that of the passive M1. This is an excellent choice for high-volume situations. The LR Baggs M1 Active acoustic soundhole pickup uses new technology developed by Gary Garrett and Lloyd Baggs to allow the pickup to respond to the guitar's string and body vibrations. It's a humbucking pickup - with a twist. In a common stacked humbucker, the second, lower coil cancels hum, but doesn't contribute anything positive to the sound. In fact, it can muddy the sound of the main coil. In the M1 Active, the hum-cancelling coil is suspended under the main coil by a tuned support that allows it to move in three dimensions. The primary coil moves with the guitar top and creates a body signal in the suspended secondary coil. Motion is carefully controlled to add the presence and realism from the body signal while suppressing runaway feedback. This brings the M1 Active to life, with string and body sound all in one. It's like having a dual pickup system in your soundhole. The M1 Active allows you to play at high levels without feedback, and the combination of string vibration and guitar body sound produces a quality of acoustic sound unrivalled by other soundhole pickups. Ideal for both live and studio situations. The M1 is easy to mount across the soundhole using two fixing screws - the tapered ends of the pickup mean that it can be fitted to guitars with soundholes of different diameters. Connection to the endpin jack socket is is via a detachable lead. (Endpin assembly and lead are both supplied.) Adjustible polepieces allow the balance of individual strings to be adjusted - although the factory setting is usually spot-on. The M1 Active is powered by a 3v lithium battery which provides over 1,000 hours of playing time. It is neatly mounted in the bottom of the pickup - a separate battery compartment is not necessary.

The M1 allows you to play at high levels without feedback, and the combination of string vibration and guitar body sound produces a quality of acoustic sound unrivalled by other soundhole pickups (well, except for the LR Baggs M1 Active!). Ideal for both live and studio situations. The M1 is easy to mount across the soundhole using two fixing screws - the tapered ends of the pickup mean that it can be fitted to guitars with soundholes of different diameters. Connection to the endpin jack socket is is via a detachable lead. (Endpin assembly and lead are both supplied.) If preferred, a longer lead is also supplied for direct connection to an amp. Adjustible polepieces allow the balance of individual strings to be adjusted - although the factory setting is usually spot-on.

LR Baggs Element Active pickup
The Element undersaddle transducer for steel-string acoustic guitars is flexible, so it makes good contact with the bridge and saddle - thus addressing one of the common problems of bridge saddle pickups. The improved coupling increases sensitivity, providing a more lively and open acoustic guitar sound with a delicate high end. It works with most common string spacings and saddle widths, including 3/32" and 1/8", for uniform string-to-string balance. This is an active pickup system - the transducer is coupled to a discrete Class-A preamp/endpin jack with pre-contoured EQ for plug-and-play convenience, and a soundhole-mounted mini volume control that requires no soldering or drilling. A velcro battery bag is also included. 9-volt battery required.

LR Baggs Element Active VTC pickup
This is the same as the standard steel-string Element undersaddle transducer/preamp, but is a newer model. Instead of a mini volume control it provides both volume and tone controls. Soundhole-mounted, requires no soldering or drilling.

| LR Baggs I-Mix pickup system
The LR Baggs I-Mix System provides faithful feedback-resistent acoustic sound for any stage or studio situation. It combines the award-winning I-Beam bridge transducer pickup with an undersaddle Baggs Element transducer. The bridge saddle transducer produces an accurate acoustic sound with lots of dynamic range, whilst the undersaddle transducer provides a little more attack for lead playing, etc. (Or, to put it differently, the bridge saddle transducer tames the aggressiveness of an undersaddle transducer!) However you view it, the combination is highly effective - especially when coupled with flexible onboard A class electronics. Volume and blend controls are provided, together with a battery compartment (9V battery needed) and a Switchcraft endpin jack (can be wired in stereo if desired).

LR Baggs Anthem pickup system
This new LR Baggs mike-pickup system for acoustic guitars restores the dominance of the microphone in the sound mix. This is unlike previous systems where only a small amount of the mike could be used to add some 'air' to the dominant pickup signal. At the heart of the patent pending Anthem system is a proprietary noise cancelling, feedback-resistant low-profile microphone, the Tru-Mic, which mounts on the bridge plate. The Anthem Tru-Mic eliminates any annoying honky or boxy qualities that have been previously associated with internal miking. Because the mike is positioned within a few millimeters of the guitar top, it has very high gain before feedback. The mike housing mounts easily to the bridge plate and the mic capsule hovers just 3mm above its surface to take advantage of the PZM or 'boundary' effect. This Tru-Mic technology picks up the sound of the vibrations of the entire soundboard and makes the mike unusually free from placement issues. A Baggs under-saddle Element pickup is combined to enhance the lowest frequencies. The two units are wired to a featherweight soundhole-mounted preamp-control module with volume, mix, phase and battery check controls. The combined signal is then routed to a standard strapjack. Powered by a 9V battery.

LR Baggs Anthem SL pickup system
For those who prefer a minimalist approach to controls, LR Baggs has created the Anthem SL. The Anthem SL has the balance between the Tru-Mic and the Element pickup pre-set for optimum performance so you can have the same great fidelity in an endpin preamp format. The preamp, with LR Baggs' famous all-discrete studio quality circuitry, is also equipped with a soundhole-mounted volume control.

LR Baggs Gigpro Universal Preamp
The Gigpro is a single-channel universal preamp. Although designed for acoustic guitar pickups, it can be used with just about any instrument that has a pickup. It also provides 9V phantom power for mini-mics and other phantom powered onboard electronics. The circuitry is generally modelled after the more sophisticated (and expensive!) Para Acoustic DI, and the sound from this preamp is as good as many floor-bound preamps. L.R Baggs has trimmed the features down to the bare essentials, but you'll find everything you need to get the best sound possible from your pickup. The EQ, for example, has only two bands plus a variable low cut but you will find it very intuitive to use. The Gigpro also include a gain knob and phase inversion. This is one of the best sounding, easiest to use, most effective and quietest small preamps on the market. Features

LR Baggs Mixpro 2-channel Preamp
The Mixpro is a versatile two-channel preamp and mixer. It allows a perfect combination of almost any sort of pickup or mini mic. It places every essential control right at the player's fingertips, eliminating the need to modify a prize guitar for onboard electronics - or to carry around a heavy, obtrusive rack. The Mixpro is the recommended choice for players who want to amplify and blend two sources, such as a guitar pickup and mini-mic. Its two input stages work well with almost any type of pickup. The two input channels are blended into a mono output signal; the blend and overall tone can be controlled with the mix and EQ controls included with the preamp. Players who only need to amplify one source should consider the Para DI, Gigpro or Feedback Master. Features

LR Baggs Para Acoustic DI
The Para Acoustic DI is a studio-quality direct box, featuring a five-band equalizer with tunable notch and midrange controls, adjustable gain and phase inversion. The proprietary Quasi-Passive EQ circuitry is totally transparent and allows control over voicing without sacrificing tone - a big advance over conventional equalizers. The anti-feedback features are particularly useful. Ideal as a partner for any high quality acoustic guitar pickup. Features
