This left-handed Gibson 335 was originally a rather dowdy walnut version. After spending several years hunting for a cherry version the owner decided to have it refinished in cherry and refitted with gold parts. I advise against refinishing old guitars because it's expensive and actually devalues the instrument in most people's eyes, but the owner had thought long and hard about this one and decided to go ahead.
Removing the original finish is a long and tricky process - 335s are made of maple ply and it's essential to avoid sanding through the top layer. It was then necessary to apply sanding sealer and flat it back as a preparation for the translucent cherry tint. All the bindings had to be scraped back, and then an amber 'aged' lacquer applied over the top.
